Oh hey, birthday girl!
Luna turns 6 years old this week (it’s crazy - I started this blog when she was just ONE!) and she’s been waiting *all* year to celebrate. And when say “all year” I mean it. Every. single. day. this girl has talked about her birthday! She’s spent hours drawing party setup ideas, writing birthday books, making guest lists, and even designing what eventually became her real-life cake.
Honestly? I’m a litttttle tired of hearing the word “birthday”, ha! But also, it’s SO fun that she was involved in the planning process this year. It was exciting daydreaming about the little details together. I can just imagine her growing up to be a party planner one day!
Like a lot of little (sorry, BIG!!) girls, she just had to have a Frozen party. I know … it’s a *little* overdone, right?! But it was fun skipping the standard Elsa plates + tablecloths and re-imagining our setup.
Over the last few years, I’ve tried to plan parties that are simple, affordable, and timeless. And it always starts with a homemade cake :)
Our street is FILLED with kids which meant our cake needed to be pretty big. We made a 10-inch tier and an 8-inch tier using about 6 boxes of white cake mix and 4 jars of buttercream frosting. (We always skip the icing on the sides and go for a bare look. It’s pretty, a lot less sugary, and still kid-approved!)
Next, we sprinkled white cake glitter between the layers. As an added touch, I hand-piped snowflakes using melted white chocolate, let them cool + harden, and “glued” them to the cake with icing. I didn’t stress about making them perfect. The kids loved them anyway!
Luna had meticulously designed her Elsa cake topper in all her birthday drawings. By chance, we happened to find a PERFECT match at a local thrift store for only $1. I scrubbed it clean, braided her hair, and popped her on top of the cake. Easy!
(Pssst! If you’re interested in purchasing this exact Elsa head online, you can find it here! As for the number 6 candle, the exact one I used is no longer available. Such a bummer! But you can find similar products here or here :)
Our party colors came straight from the cake topper: teal, blue, pink, white. Teal snack cups filled with snow-white popcorn. Pale blue cake plates. White spoons and napkins. Pink garden roses that we picked out together the day before the party.
I lined the table with this kraft paper which I use for pretty much EVERYTHING! I felt like it flowed really well with the cake and the letter board :)
I also used a pop of unexpected color - bright red strawberries. The kids devoured them within 5 minutes!
On that subject, let’s talk about party food!
I’m really intentional with our food selections. I try to choose foods that are a) crowd pleasers, b) blend well with the party colors and c) include healthy options. Mossstly because everyone has a better time when they’re well fed. So yes - we had cake and (blue) juice, but we also served turkey + cheese sliders, apple slices, strawberries, white cheddar popcorn, and water.
All that was left was balloons :)
We found a cheap variety pack at Hobby Lobby that worked really well with our colors. Then we tied three balloons to each chair at varying heights for a pretty, dimensional look. (I would have used more balloons but helium is SO expensive now, don’t you think?!)
As it came together, Lu couldn’t stop gushing about how much she loved it all … and I loved it too! No party favors or extravagant setups or planned activities. Just a bunch of kids hanging out eating cake for a few hours and one realllllly happy birthday girl.
OH! And I ALMOST FORGOT! If you’re looking for an Elsa dress, we found this one on Amazon and it was absolutely PERFECT. (Okay - it was technicallyyy one size too big but that was my fault. I accidentally ordered a size 7 when I should have gone with a size 6.) But it’s so sparkly and pretty and such good quality. Highly highly highly recommend!!
Have you hosted a Frozen-themed birthday party?! I’d love to hear about it in the comments!
Always with love,
